You find yourself in need of a personal loan and discover one of the major qualifications a lender checks is credit history, but your credit history is bad. What can you do to improve your credit history and get a personal loan? A bunch!
Repairing your credit will take time but is relatively easy to do. Step one – get a credit report. If you have never seen your credit report, get one immediately. How? There are a few options, but perhaps the easiest is to ask your lender. If you recently applied for a personal loan, your lender should have a copy. Simply ask for a copy of your credit report. Lenders are not required to give it to you, but most will consider it and/or review it with you.
Understanding the items on your credit report is critical. Most major institutions report payment history and note your payment behavior … the number of times you paid on-time, late 30+ days, late 60+ days, etc. Most financial judgments against you will show on the credit report along with any write-offs. If you had a medical procedure of any type and your insurance failed to pay on-time, you might see this on your report as well.
Make a list of each institution that has filed a late payment on your credit and prepare to do battle – providing you feel you are in the right. If you know you made late payments to a given institution, document the circumstances. If you are unsure of any late payment on your credit report, file a complaint with the reporting agency. Filing a complaint is one method to immediately repair your credit. The reporting agency will temporarily remove the infraction until additional verification can be made with the vendor.
If you are applying for a personal loan and have a recent copy of your credit report, be prepared to explain each negative point. Most personal loan lenders will overlook medical infractions on your credit report. Why? Because most lenders understand the bureaucracies involved with insurance providers and further understand most providers simply do not pay on-time. In addition, student loans are given additional consideration for a variety of other reasons.
Personal loan officers understand the challenges many people face repaying various types of previous loans. If you have a poor credit history, do not let that stop you from a applying! Understand your credit history and take control. Once in control, apply for your personal loan.
